The next stop on the MXGP World Championship for Calvin Vlaanderen and the Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team was Spain at the intu Xanadú – Arroyomolinos circuit in Madrid. The track was very technical with bumps and ruts around the hard pack track making it a difficult weekend for the riders with temperatures also high.
In the qualifying race, Vlaanderen finished ninth to secure two championship points at a track that was tricky to overtake on – despite there being lots of lines and ruts there was only one main option.
During the first race, Vlaanderen was eighth on the opening lap but was able to make a move on Seewer to finish a solid seventh. The gaps were close so there wasn’t much in it for a top five result.
In moto two and the track at it’s roughest, Vlaanderen again rode solid to bring home an eighth in what was a consistent weekend.
7-8 meant eighth overall and Vlaanderen remains a strong sixth in the championship standings closing in on the top five. The team now have a weekend off from MXGP before heading to France for round seven. 
Calvin Vlaanderen (8th overall): The Spanish GP was definitely a bit better than the years before. Being my least favourite track on the calendar I was happy with my speed over the weekend. It got better and better and I felt like I should have been inside top five. I had a big crash in the second race so I’m glad that I am okay from it. Eighth overall on the day and sixth in the championship with catching the guys in front is positive. I have a weekend off now to recover and then get back to it next weekend in France.
