The De Baets MX team competed in the first round of the Italian Championship in Riola Sardo on Sunday. The riders have shown positive things which can be used in their preparation towards the season.
For Brent van de Walle, Tyla van de Poel and Lotte van Drunen, this was the first race of the season, so it was a matter of waiting to see where they would stand. However, the preparation is going well so they started the day with confidence.
Tyla and Brent competed in the 125cc class and managed to set a seventeenth and nineteenth time in time practice. It took some time getting used to the track but during the day it would get better and better. Both riders showed good speed in the motos but also had some bad luck. Tyla came back to fourteenth place in the first moto after a bad start and a crash. Brent was strong in both motos and showed a pace for the top ten. In the second moto he came all the way from the back to twelfth place, showing his potential for the rest of the season.
Lotte van Drunen started in the strong MX2 class. Lotte fought her way between the men and rode two good motos. For Lotte, it was especially important to gain race rhythm and find her rhythm. With a 23-24 in the motos, she can look back on this race with satisfaction and continue to build towards the season.
The De Baets MX team will now travel to Italy to train there this week. This weekend, the second race of the Italian Championship is scheduled in Mantova.
