The penultimate round of the world championship MX2 was held on the legendary track of Maggiora in Italy. Camden McLellan of the JM Racing Honda team managed to finish inside of the top ten. Scott Smulders came close of scoring points in the second moto but finally finished in 21st position.
Due to heavy rainfall, the track circumstances were wet and muddy on Saturday. McLellan was feeling himself at home in these kind of circumstances and posted the fourth fastest time in time practice. In the qualifying heat he took the holeshot and was leading the race till the last lap. He collided with a back marker uphill and crashed. He lost a lot of positions and finally finished the race in thirteenth position. Scott Smulders came home in 24th position.
McLellan didn’t took a good start in the first moto and had a lot of catching up to do. On the fast track in Maggiora it was difficult to make up positions and finally he finished the race in thirteenth position. Smulders crashed twice during the race but his feeling on the bike became better near the end so this gave him confidence for the second moto.
Both riders were taking a better start in the second moto. McLellan was riding in eleventh position for a long time but in the closing stages of the race he managed to pass some riders and finally finished in ninth position. Smulders came close of scoring points as well. In the closing stages of the race he worked himself up into nineteenth position but due to a few small mistakes he lost two positions and finished the race in 21st position.
After the two motos it was McLellan who ended the weekend in ninth position while Smulders had to be satisfied with 26th position. With only one round to go, McLellan sits in fifteenth position in the standings! The final round will be held in Matterley Basin in Great Britain this weekend.
